Celebrating a Milestone? Write a blog!

Who would have thought that reaching out to touch someone can cost close to nothing? I still remember those days when MCI and AT&T were battling for my business so I can call home for less than a dollar per minute! Celebrating milestones became an expensive effort when friends and family are scattered all over the world.

But these days, everyone is a published writer, and putting up a blog is an evening's worth of cutting and pasting, uploading and downloading, and sending off that general email to everybody in the contacts list.

We did it back in 2007, when the Doug-meister, better known then as the Pirate Papa, turned 40.

For the love of Doug, now known to his hundreds of followers as geophf, we've created this new space. Go ahead and say hello (easy-to-fill-out form on the left, just for you!), congratulate him on reaching 50, and enjoy the few snippets from the life that he hasn't revealed (yet) to the world.

It's hard to surprise Doug, as he doesn't wait for others to surprise him with a favorite toy or treat. He'll just go ahead and buy it himself! Hopefully, this blog will be one of the few pleasant and enjoyable surprises of his life, and your comments and greetings will add to the memories of this special day. Do join our virtual party, and raise your cups of sakΓ© to toast our birthday boy! Kanpai!

Really? Fifty? You may be old Tatay but no one can stop you from being witty and nifty!
All I can say is - smile, while you still have teeth.
Happy, happy birthday Doug and may you continue to be blessed!

Dear Doug,

Happy 50th birthday!
What a milestone to add to your other milestones! I'm still amazed at how you can speak Tagalog, really.
Enjoy the moments, as you always do. May the magnanimous God shine on you and grant you continued health, prosperity, and the presence of love and family in your life.
Maligayang kaarawan!

Blessings,
Danny and Sterie

The best way to enjoy life is to forget your age! But you are now officially allowed to be forgetful, have selective memory and only remember the things you want. Happy 50th birthday, Doug!

Dearest Doug,
50 years? You're only half way there if you take care of yourself the way you are at present. You've been blessed with a witty sense of humor, a loving family and loving friends, and great potential to someday become a credible tenor!
We look forward to celebrating this half-century milestone with you.
Lots of love,
John & Wanda

I was wondering who Doug was and thought I made a mistake about the identity of Diane's husband. Fortunately I read the entire blog. Phewww I was not crazy after all.

So Michael (aka Dawg with the accent), you've finally caught up with us and reached the Age of Enlightenment. May you have a wonderful day with the people you love and who love you the most. May our loving Heavenly Father bless you with continued good health so you can enjoy life more abundantly, serve Him more passionately and become more like Jesus obedient to your calling. Be blessed with His unsurpassed love, joy and peace. Happy birthday dear cousin-in-law.

Greetings from Antipolo

Thank you for being an amazing and supportive husband to Diane and for being such an awesome, cool Dad to Elena Marie and Isabel Marie! You are truly blessed, just as you are a blessing and an inspiration to your family and friends.
Our prayers and wishes for you:
- for quiet moments when your days are busy;
- time for the big and little things that mean the most to you;
- for love and joy to fill each day;
- for warm memories to look back on;
- for smiles, laughters and happiness;
- for the closeness of family and friends;
- for continued good health;
- and many more blessings for you to count.
Enjoy your very special day with your loved one!
May God bless you on your Birthday. And may the light of His love shine on you today, tomorrow and always!

I don't think I've ever seen doug come into the bakery without a smile on. Im trying but i just cant. Oh maybe it was like one time we didnt have whip cream to put on his coffee so he frowned and fretted a little bit but I don't think he or diana held a grudge. I've lots of respect for doug's literary tastes after he kntroduced me to american gods last year. Ive still got the list of other books u gave me too. Amyway doug has a great family and a terrific infectious (and a little obnoxious) attitude that my coworkers and i really enjoy.

Welcome to the first day of truly being 50! I hope you had a great time yesterday with all of your surprises! This decade was my favorite! You are still young, can still move around with ease and you have all these years of wisdom. Enjoy every minute of it! Marilyn Krause

Happy birthday, neighbor and fellow parishioner Doug! At 50, I suppose you're too set in your ways for me to make a proper Southerner out of you, but next time I see you I will hug your neck!
Tip: white wine goes quite well with grits.
Many years!
Susan Farris
